CHANDIGARH: Tomato prices have skyrocketed in a matter of a few days. From Rs 30 to Rs 80 per kg, this essential ingredient used in many dishes is going beyond the reach of most Tricity residents. Dip in supply from Himachal, besides there being no supply from Nasik and Bangalore yet has been blamed for this increase.
Retailers complain that heavy monsoon showers in Himachal has led to poor produce of tomato and since the supply from down south is yet to start the prices have suddenly shot up.

“Tomato is only produced in Himachal during the monsoon in the north and is transported form there through out the region but the quantity we are receiving is very less.
It will be only by next week that the tomato will be transported from other places like Bangalore, and next month from Nasik that prices would come down by a few notches,” said Sanjeev Kumar, a vegetable wholesale dealer at the Sector 26 grain market.
The price of tomato has shot up to Rs 80. It was available in the markets of the Tricity for Rs.30 last week.
Other vegetables too have seen a price hike in the last one week.
Where the price of bottle gourd has shot up from Rs 30 to Rs 55, beans are being sold at Rs 70, up by Rs 40. Cauliflower has become dearer by Rs 35, while capsicum’s price is up by 50%. Lady finger too has seen a hike of Rs 20.
